Description

Blue Bay 2030 is collaboration of environmental groups in Hout Bay who share a common vision of achieving the iconic Blue Flag standard for Hout bay by 2030. In line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030, the Blue Bay 2030 is focused on creating employment opportunities through tourism and circular economics in order to achieve the Blue Flag goal. Partners include JunkStars, Hout Bay Harbour CleanUp group, Friends of the River, Sentinel Ocean Alliance, Thrive Hout Bay, Meraki Bay, David “the Beach clean up executive” Beckett,  Harvest Youth, Atlantic Boat Club and Hout Bay Yacht Club. The collab is supported by Ranmarine Rotterdam, Discover Hout Bay, Hout Bay Partnership, Circe Launches, Captain Jacks Boat trips and Pescaluna Fishing. The core offering of Blue Bay 2030 is to establish a four wheeler bicycle hop on hop off route around the harbour precinct to shuttle tourists between the partners of the collaboration. For instance visitors can join the hop on hop off Four wheeler cycle tour to take part in water clean-ups with either the WasteShark drone, a kayak or one of our two boats, “Ollie” ( HB Harbour CleanUp Group) and “Orange” ( HB Yacht Club). The collected garbage can be traded for processed and viable plastic at the JunkSTARS shop and then taken to the Hout Bay Yacht Club to experience the thrill of shredding the plastic in our multi toothed shredding machine.  From there, the shredded plastic is used in our injection moulder to, make usable plastic items like golf tees and bath plugs and souvenirs. These items are then sold to the visiting tourists, thereby closing the loop and funding jobs
